probably the simplest system is "make a roll vs a DC or opposing roll, if you roll over then deduct the difference from a countdown/HP, take turns making one roll at a time", but there's a lot you can do, do you want grappling? Hey I’ve been thinking this for awhile and decided to post it here. When I was reading about the creation of D&D as an expansion of Chainmail it occurred to me that nothing about the game requires modern technology and hence could’ve existed centuries earlier, at least post printing presses.
