PETG leads to messy infill much more often than pla does. Petg does not like when infill crosses over itself (line, grid). Gyroid seems to be one of the best IME. Seems like there is another issue. You should be able to print and have them look normal like as if it was PLA.

I have done some tests measuring the breaking strength of the unprinted filament itself fresh off the spool, and compared to printed samples, and found the raw material to be like 30-40% stronger in some cases (and not in Z, either).
